Osborne Clarke advises on sale of Grand Central Railway to Arriva

8 Nov 2011

Osborne Clarke has advised long-standing client Grand Central Railway on its sale to transport operator Arriva plc.

Grand Central is an open access rail operator, running passenger train services daily between Sunderland and London and Bradford/Halifax and London. It provides approximately 700,000 passenger journeys a year. As an open access operator Grand Central does not receive subsidy from, or pay any premium to, the Department for Transport.

Arriva has three UK rail franchises, as well as concessions on London Overground and the Tyne & Wear Metro.

Simon Spooner, corporate partner, Osborne Clarke, said:

"We have advised Grand Central since its inception, seeing the company grow from a very promising start-up into a successful train operator. We are really pleased to have been able to advise them on this next phase of their development."

The Osborne Clarke team advising Grand Central was led by corporate partner Simon Spooner and included associate Jeremy Cavendish and solicitor Christopher Oliver, with associate Tracey Wright advising on Tax.
