Osborne Clarke advises on £560 Million PPP Defence Contract

Osborne Clarke has advised Babcock Marine (Babcock) on a £560 million PPP contract.

The contract, an extension of the Warship Support Modernisation Initiative, will see Babcock continue to provide support and management services to HM Naval Base Devonport until 2013.

The contract originally covered a five year period from September 2002 to September 2007 and was subsequently extended to April 2009. Under the agreement Babcock provides engineering support to the Royal Navy, both ships and submarines, waterfront support services, logistics services, transport and estate facilities management at HM Naval Base Devonport.

Babcock is the largest private sector employer in Devon and Cornwall.  Employing around 4,500 people, Devonport Royal Dockyard has been owned and operated by Babcock since 2007.

Julia Wood, the projects partner who led the OC team commented:

"We are delighted to have been part of the team that helped secure the contract award for Babcock. The team is looking forward to building on the achievements of the last seven years to deliver a class-leading partnering arrangement."

The OC team was led by projects partner Julia Wood and included partner Richard Bretton, associates Leanne Coates, Jonathan Stewart and Grant Squire with solicitors Helena BanyardSmith, Matthew Germain and Anna Woodward.

The MoD was advised by its in-house team at Abbey Wood and Denton Wilde Sapte.
